LEMMINGS (SUNSOFT / PSYGNOSIS)

SUPER CD-ROM 2 (JAPANESE VERSION, TEXTS IN ENGLISH)

One of the most sucessful games of all-time, Lemmings was originally created, back in the early 90īs, by DMA Design, one of the best development teams from powerful Psygnosis. Lemmings became a cult game among AMIGA, Atari ST and PC users, and itīs huge success gave birth to several sequences.

And why is this game so interesting? Itīs hard to explain it with words, but all you have to do to find the answer is to play a few matches.. Iīm pretty sure youīll become addicted on it in a few minutes. In Lemmings, you must guide the main characters towards the exit, using the available tools. If misguided, the characters (named Lemmings, of course! ^_^") will face a certain and gruesome death (wow! ^^"). On each stage, before the match actually starts, thereīs a little text explaining which actions would be indicated at that very moment.

And what about the PC-ENGINE version? This conversion was made by Sunsoft (softhouse responsible for awesome games such as Batman (Megadrive) and Waku Waku 7 (NeoGeo)), and it keeps the same mood from the original game. Itīs pretty hard to control the pointer on screen without a mouse, but you get used with the control, after a little time. With 4 difficulty levels, and a "1 or 2 Players" option, Lemmings on PC-ENGINE is a game that keeps interest on high levels for a long time.

But there are some serious problems with this game, as well. Ok, Lemmings has a good gameplay (even without a mouse) and is quite interesting as well (although some stages are too damn irritating), but on visual and audio aspects, it is quite disappointing. Regarding on graphics, the PCE version uses an extremely short color palette and, the worst problem, it has frequent and terrible "slowdowns", when there are too many lemmings on screen. Such problems are unforgivable in a machine with a videoprocessor as powerful as PC-ENGINEīs. And, about the soundtrack, the well-known musics were completely redone, and although the tunes themselves are quite pleasant, their sound quality is pure crap.

Even though Lemmings on PCE is still a damn funny game, it canīt really be compared to the original games released in the 90īs. If youīre only a casual gamer, itīs an interesting title; otherwise, it can be quite disappointing.
